Fire Prevention Week starts Sunday in Campbell River. This year’s theme is focusing on cooking safety and fire prevention, with Fire Chief Dan Verdun saying that cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires.
“Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths,” said Verdun. “The good news is that you can prevent most cooking fires and burns and help keep your family safer with simple but effective tips.”
Tips for cooking safety include staying in the kitchen while frying, boiling, or grilling food, remain at home while food is cooking, and to be on alert.
If you have doubts about dealing with a small fire, the City says you should leave, close the door behind you, and to call 911.
Your kids could also learn about fire safety as members of the Campbell River Fire Department will be visiting Grade 3 classes this month.
The visits will have the firefighters introduce kids to the fire safety house program, which will reinforce Fire Prevention Week.
Fire Prevention Week is from October 8 to 14.
