New pool, more arena seating on the way for Strathcona Gardens

A major overhaul for Strathcona Gardens is going ahead, now that the regional district has approval to borrow $65 million.

The Strathcona Regional District put the borrowing question through an alternative approval process. Only 106 people formally spoke in opposition, less than 1% of the electorate, and not enough to prevent approval – a response of 10% or more would have been required. The deadline was October 4.

The upgrade is being called the REC-REATE project and will be in two phases. The first is a complete rebuild of the pool and change rooms, and a new fitness and wellness centre. Phase two will be an expansion of the Rod Brind’Amour arena to hold enough seating for a junior A hockey team, and a walking track.

The district board will discuss next steps at the November 8 meeting.

What’s in the upgrade?

  • New aquatic centre with 8-lane 25 m pool
  • Accessible therapy pool
  • Hot pool
  • Leisure pool with a lazy river
  • Climbing wall
  • Waterslide
  • New fitness and wellness centre
  • Sauna and steam rooms
  • Renovated change rooms
  • Renovated administration areas
  • Increased seating for Rod Brind’Amour arena
  • Walking track
  • New hockey team rooms
  • New referee rooms
