Over 960 people on Cortes Island still without power

While most of Campbell River has its power back, 966 people living on Cortes Island are still in the dark.

According to BC hydro, power has been out since Boxing Day because of a downed tree across their wires.

Ted Olynyk, manager of community relations for BC Hydro says while crews are still making repairs, access has been a challenge.

“Accommodation is not available in Cortes, so crews need to come off to have a hot meal, shower and a place to stay,” said Olynyk.

“We are hoping that everything should be up today, but it depends on the damage and if they can get through the areas that are challenging on the mainland side.”

He says that in situations like these, Hydro recommends having an emergency plan, an emergency kit, knowing what to do if your power is out for a while, and putting yourself in a position that’s out of harm’s way.
