Bus strike coming to an end with new deal next week

The buses will soon be running again.

PWTransit says the company has reached a deal with Unifor local 114 for the Comox Valley and Campbell River transit systems.

They add the ratification date still needs to be set, and if all goes well, details on when transit services will start again will be announced next week.

The bus strike started in mid-December and is focused on wage disparities for drivers, mechanics and cleaners. BC Transit contracts out the bus service to PWTransit.

Unifor Local 114 represents workers in the Comox Valley and Campbell River. They have maintained their main issue is wages and benefits, which they want to see increased to be on par with bus services in other similar-sized BC communities.

Bus services in both regions have been plagued by driver shortages and route cancellations since this summer. The company says it has had trouble attracting new drivers despite a recruitment campaign. The union says increasing wages will help attract more drivers to both services.
