Fruit tree harvesting program aims to expand this summer

A volunteer program that collects unwanted fruit from local trees was so successful last year, it’s expanding.

Volunteers with Greenways Land Trust’s Fruit Tree Project harvested nearly 6,000 pounds of food from 31 trees around Campbell River last year. Most of it was donated to community partners, including the food bank, community kitchen, and local school food programs.

Most people using the service are elderly and struggle with picking and processing fruit from their trees. Greenways saw a huge increase in demand for the program because of the extended growing season.

This year Greenways will offer workshops teaching volunteers and homeowners how to prune and graft fruit trees, and how to make preserves.
