Site work underway for homeless village

Site work is already underway for Campbell River’s temporary housing village near Nunns Creek Park.

Mayor Kermit Dahl is keeping tabs on the work at 1299 Homewood Road.

In an update to city council Thursday (Feb. 29), Dahl says trucks are already moving out big piles of dirt.

“It is very nice looking material. It’s dark and rich and it’s grown weeds for 20 years there successfully, but the site is coming along really nicely,” Dahl said to chuckles from staff and councillors.

Speaking with the owner of Upland Contracting, Dahl says there’s about 2,500 square meters of soil being removed from the site – about 160 dump trucks.

“It’s a lot of truck loads of material to get that site ready. It’ll be nice to see when the fence starts happening and services and I think it’s going to be a great thing for Campbell River and I think it’s going to be good for the neighbourhood actually bringing some order to that site,” Dahl said.

The provincial government and city announced last month a partnership to build HEARTH Village – an acronym for Homelessness Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing.

The village with 24-7 supervision is slated to be open this summer. It will also provide skills training, meals, health care and referrals for community support.

Dahl says it’s great to see the project coming together that started as an idea in May 2023.
