Smoking sewers no cause for alarm, while city does testing

If you see smoke coming from the sewers this week, there’s probably nothing to worry about.

On Monday and Tuesday, the city will be smoke-testing sanitary sewer systems, using smoke to spot leaks and cracks. They will be testing systems between Island Highway 19A South and Murphy Street South, and from Robron Road to Alder Street south.

Residents in the area have been contacted directly by the city in advance of the work.

The testing uses a harmless vapour that’s highly visible at low concentrations. You may see it coming out of manholes, the sewer stack on your house, catch basins and downspouts.

Visit the city’s website for more information about what to expect from testing.
