Some regional district directors think they should get paid extra for attending conferences, but at least one disagrees.
The Strathcona Regional District board’s Electoral Areas Service Committee discussed the issue this week. They decided to recommend seven BC conferences be added to the list of meetings for which they can claim compensation.
Area D director John Rice was the lone vote against.
“I think what we get paid as directors is quite high in the province, and I’m happy as part of my job to attend meetings. I don’t think I need to get paid for them, ” he said. “When I go off to conferences, I get paid for mileage. I don’t feel that I need to get paid to be at the conference, so I’m quite happy with the way things are, as they are right now.”
Directors already get their travel and conference expenses covered, along with a per diem for overnight travel. If the board approves the committee’s recommendation, that will mean they can also claim remuneration for attending conferences, as they do now for committee meetings.
