Student-favourite teacher wins honours for making science fun

A student-favourite science teacher at Carihi recently received an award for teaching excellence.

Bill Deagle teaches science at Carihi Secondary. He was awarded the Gordon Gore Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in BC for 2023. The prize is awarded by the BC Association of Physics Teachers and is presented each year to an exceptional science teacher in the province.

Deagle’s hands-on approach to science teaching takes students beyond problems on a page; for example, he took his class to the curling rink to demonstrate momentum and friction in real-world situations.

Deagle says bringing humour into the classroom and being available outside class hours has also helped connect and inspire his students, and open them up to the endless possibilities in the field of science.
