Campbell River’s Sunday farmers market is one of the biggest in BC, and organizers are looking for city help to make it even better.
Stats recently compiled by the BC Association of Farmers Markets show last year Campbell River’s market had nearly 600 hourly visitors, well above the provincial average of 397, and even more than markets in downtown Vancouver.
The numbers show the average shopper spent nearly $40 per visit, and the market has an annual economic impact on the local economy of nearly $2.2 million.
The society which operates the market will be at council Thursday night, they are asking the city for a five-year lease at the Spirit Square along with $2,500 in one-time extra funding to expand activities and events for kids.
“These funds would allow us to hire a qualified coordinator to ensure quality programming, coordination with community groups and supervision,” says the society’s letter to council.
They are also asking for $2,500 in one-time funding for marketing materials and advertising for the “Hatch & Hype” program.
Council will review their request at the Thursday meeting.
Weekend markets start on May 5 and will run every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm.
