40 housing units could come to Campbell River through property transfer

40 affordable housing units could be coming to Campbell River.

The city is working with the Métis Nation Government of BC (MNBC) to do a property transfer of 11, 23, 35, and 47 Dogwood Street.

The transfer would not only bring the housing units, but also a daycare facility.

Vice president of MNBC and Minister of Housing Walter Mineault says the property will allow the nation to make real progress.

“We are committed to creating opportunities for Métis citizens to thrive, and this development will make a meaningful impact for many,” said Mineault.

The city says most of the properties are vacant lots, which would allow for apartment, social or community-care facilities.

Mayor Kermit Dahl says council is committed to working on addressing housing availability.

“This property transfer is another step the City is taking to encourage the development of affordable housing options to support Campbell River’s growth and vitality,” said Dahl.

The city adds that an application to rezone the properties will be submitted to city council at a later date.
