Two events set for Campbell River Fire Hall in May

The Campbell River Fire Department is inviting residents to learn hands-on fire safety at two upcoming events.

The city says the events will focus on public education, with both taking place during Emergency Preparedness Week in May.

The first event will be Wildfire Preparedness Day, where residents can learn about wildfire threats and tips on how to firesmart their homes and reduce risk.

FireSmart Coordinator Shawn Hall says wildfire preparedness has become important in BC.

“FireSmart principles have shown that they are effective at reducing the risk to life and property in the most extreme wildfire conditions and we are excited to welcome residents to Fire Hall #1 to show them around and share this important information,” said Hall.

The event includes specialized equipment, a demonstration, and tips to protect your home.

It will take place on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Hall 1 on 13th Avenue.

The second event will be an open house, where you can aim with a fire hose, try out hydraulic power tools, watch live rescue demonstrations, and get lifted by the tower truck.

Fire chief Dan Verdun says the open house is an opportunity to meet with the firefighters.

“Visitors can even get hands-on and discover what it’s like to use some of our tools and equipment,” said Verdun.

That event will take place on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., also on 13th Avenue.
