March to remember missing and murdered indigenous women and girls

Tomorrow is Red Dress Day, marked across Canada to remember murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls.

In Campbell River local volunteers have organized an event to meet Sunday morning at the longhouse on the Foreshore, then walk through town in a ceremony. All are welcome to attend and people are welcome to bring drums.

Indigenous women in Canada account for 11% of all missing women, even though Indigenous people are less than 5% of the country’s total population. Stats also show Indigenous women are more likely to be exposed to physical and sexual violence.

The red dress is a symbol of the missing and the lost, started in 2010 by a Metis artist.

To participate in today’s walk, meet at the longhouse in Ostler Park by 10:45 Sunday morning.
