Campbell River RCMP say calls regarding drive-by shootings are increasing in the city and are posing a significant risk to public safety.
Police say several people have been struck in the face and neck with one bystander almost losing their eye, by teenagers shooting water gel blaster, or airsoft guns around the city.
Constable Maury Tyre says while this may seem like innocent fun, it has real-world consequences.
“Realistically, the young people carrying out these shootings think they’re just having a bit of fun,” he says. “There is a very real chance of injury, even with water pellets or plastic bb pellets these guns shoot.
“It’s just not ok, and police will address it accordingly.”
He says on top of charges in the criminal code, the driver could also face sanctions under the Motor Vehicle Act for various driving offences which could end up causing novice drivers to have their license suspended.
Anyone with information regarding these drive-by shootings is asked to call the Campbell River RCMP detachment at 250-286-6221.
