A new upscale hotel in Gold River had a special ceremony yesterday to reveal the totem pole which will welcome visitors this summer.
The hotel is a complete remodelling of the old Gold River Chalet.
Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations Elder Sam Johnson led the ceremony yesterday outside the Nations’ Baymont by Wyndham Hotel, which opens in June this year.
The hotel is a key part of their plans for the future. The nations are focused on growing tourism opportunities across their traditional territory. Once complete, the hotel property will include a Welcome House that will provide visitor information, host cultural archives, and a retail area.
The Island Coast Economic Trust is working with the nations to fund the construction of the Welcome House, located in the centre of Gold River.
