Carved arch represents a positive path forward for all of Campbell River

A new carving unveiled on the Tyee Spit today recognizes local nations’ deep connection to the land, and also represents co-operation.

In a ceremony this morning attended by Wei Wai Kum hereditary chiefs and elected council, along with dozens of onlookers, the carved arch was unveiled. It depicts two figures holding up a sea serpent, recalling ancient connections between families and nations on this part of the coast, and their resilience.

Elected Chief Councilor Chris Roberts says it’s also about finding common ground and moving forward for all local communities.

“We have to leave this land better than what we inherited it as. It’s not ours, we don’t own it. It’s our responsibility to care for it and we pass that responsibility on to our young ones, and the cycle continues,” he said.

Roberts said the future requires all local communities to work together, indigenous and non-indigenous.

“The city of Campbell River, Campbell Riverites, and us together, we have a lot to be proud of and celebrate in this beautiful place,” he said.

Mayor Kermit Dahl also spoke at the event, and said the only way forward for Campbell River is to work closely with local First Nations in a spirit of collaboration and reconciliation.

“Today is not simply a momentary celebration, it’s a milestone in our ongoing journey towards deeper understanding and collaboration,” he said. “This artwork will serve as a beacon of our shared values and aspirations. It reminds us of our responsibility to respect and learn from each other, grow together, and foster an environment where every member of our community can thrive.”

The Tyee Spit was a seasonal fishing village for thousands of years, until it was industrialized in the 20th century. The Wei Wai Kum still have a village and cemetery on the south end of the spit.

The arch was carved by Junior Henderson, Ernie Puglas, and Karver Everson.
