Elementary students from Cedar and Penfield schools had the chance to experience a ‘play potlatch’ last month in a special event.
It took place at Cedar Elementary and was led by Qwaya Sam from the Ahousaht Nation on the Island’s west coast. The ‘play potlatch’ was conducted in the Nuu-Chah-Nulth tradition and was possible thanks to Art Start grants received by both schools.
Throughout the year students created gifts to be exchanged at the potlatch, including blankets which they presented to Indigenous elders.
The play potlatch was opened by hereditary chief Johnathan Henderson from the Wei Wai Kum nation. It also featured a feast of salmon, bannock and watermelon.
School District 72 says the day was a powerful embodiment of the spirit of reconciliation.
