City putting animal control services on a shorter leash

Animal control services are going to be under direct city management again, starting on Canada Day.

After several years relying on a contractor for animal control services, the city of Campbell River is taking the portfolio back, effective July 1.

Coastal Animal Services has had the contract for several years, responsible for enforcing city bylaws about leashes, animals in public places, and licencing.

They operate the city pound on Merecroft Road, beside the city public works yard. Mayor Kermit Dahl says after the changeover, the pound will remain in the same location but under city management.

Dahl thanked the contractor for their years of service and professionalism, and says the city is hoping the transition will be smooth, without disrupting services.
