Sayward by-election this month, all-candidates meeting Sunday

Two council seats are up for grabs in the village of Sayward this month in an upcoming by-election.

After two councilors resigned this spring over what they called a dysfunctional and unproductive government, a by-election has now been set for July 20. Advance voting will be on July 10.

Kohen Gilkin resigned from his seat in March. He was one of the youngest councilors ever elected in a Canadian municipal election.

In May, Tom Tinsley resigned, leaving only the mayor and two councilors, just enough for a quorum for the five-person council.

There are five candidates vying for the two seats, including former Chief Administrative Officer John France.

The village of 330 people has struggled with a fractious council and conflicts with community members since 2020.

An all-candidates forum has been scheduled for July 7 at the Kelsey Centre in Sayward from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, hosted by the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce.
