Healing centre under construction on Quadra Island

A new centre looks to help those struggling with mental health and addiction on Quadra Island.

That comes from the BC government, announcing that the Wei Wai Kai First Nation is converting its former Tsa̲kwa̲’luta̲n resort into a healing centre for those struggling with addiction.

They plan to have the centre offer cultural and medical healing services for as much as 40 people at a time, with Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jennifer Whiteside saying that with many pathways to addiction, they need to provide just as much for recovery.

The centre will have a more holistic approach to recovery, rooted in traditional knowledge and guided by evidence-based practices, according to the province.

They say along with 20 treatment beds for adults, the centre will also have single and double occupancy rooms, a team to provide treatment plans for different needs, common areas, staff areas, counselling, group meeting, and clinical rooms, administrative offices, facilities for art therapy and physical activity, and a cultural programs room.

As part of the project, $7.9 million will be invested to the renovation and operations of the centre, which is under construction.

They aim to have the beds available to the community by the fall this year.
