SRD encourages you to make address signs more visible

The Strathcona Regional District is encouraging you to make sure your address signs are visible for emergencies.

In a release, the district says while privacy and being anonymous are some of the reasons people enjoy rural living, not having a visible address can lead to confusion and delay for first responders in the event of an emergency.

District board chair Mark Baker says for the responders, every second counts.

“Ensure that first responders can easily spot your address sign and locate you quickly,” said Baker.

To make sure signs are visible, the district has seven guidelines for you to follow.

This includes having address numbers be four inches tall and 0.5 inches wide, using contrasting colours to make the numbers stand out, using lighting to keep it visible at night, making sure it’s visible on both directions, attaching the sign to a post or tree within three metres of the road, having the sign be high enough for drivers to see, and to post the sign on the road if your address is on corner lot.

The district adds your sign should also display your civic address, which helps identify the physical location of a building and has the street name and number.
