It’s been a record-breaking year for the Greenways Land Trust’s Fruit Tree Project, with nearly 10,000 pounds of fruit harvested from local back yards.
The project connects homeowners unable to collect all the fruit from their trees with volunteers who come and do the harvesting.
This year the project partnered with the school district to provide fresh, local fruit for free in local schools. They also continue to work with the Campbell River Food Bank to supply the produce to the community and local organizations that need it. Fruit too bruised or ripe for human consumption goes to local farmers to use as animal feed.
The project helps with local food security, and also removes urban sources of food that can attract bears.
