City council will finalize plans for new designated overnight shelters this week, and will also review negative feedback from the public about the sites being considered.
The city is legally required to provide designated space for homeless people to be able to shelter overnight. The former designated site is being developed into the new Homewood Village, which will provide shelter and support for people seeking pathways out of addiction and homelessness.
The two new sites proposed are the parking lot beside the Enterprise Centre near city hall, and the north end of Ostler Park by the longhouse. The plans have prompted several letters to council citing concerns about nearby playgrounds and schools, potential impacts of crime on residential neighbourhoods, and safety.
The topic is scheduled for discussion at Thursday’s regular meeting, as part of proposed amendments to the city’s public nuisance bylaw.
