NDP leader David Eby was in Campbell River Friday afternoon to announce that Cedar School will be getting a new replacement.
“I’m here to announce that we will be building a brand-new school to replace Cedar Elementary in Campbell River,” he said, to applause from children and their teachers who had come to listen. “In addition to the school, we will also include space for the Laichwiltach Family [Life] Society, for their annex that partially burned down in a fire.”
The Laichwiltach Family Life Society uses an old school building on the Cedar property as a community and education centre, but it was seriously damaged by a fire in July.
Eby says the new Cedar School will have space specifically for the society to call a new home.
Eby also went through points from the NDP’s platform for schools, including a commitment to have an educational assistant in every class from kindergarten to Grade 3. He adds his party will also make sure each school has a counsellor, hire more teachers, and keep class sizes from increasing.
