1,746 goldfish removed from Campbell River Pond

One-thousand-and-46 goldfish have been removed from a local pond in Campbell River.

On Monday, the City announced they have finished their remediation work, removing 1,746 invasive goldfish from the Erickson Stormwater Pond.

The work was in response to the fish being discovered last year, where because they can damage natural ecosystems, crews had to remove them. The work took two weeks to finish.

Operations Manager for Utilities Steve Roehr says the number and size of them shows why these fish are a challenge when released to nature.

“They multiply quickly and grow to be big, and that edges out native species,” said Roehr.

The City says they worked with an environmental contractor to remove the goldfish, adding a follow-up remediation effort to make sure all the goldfish has been removed will likely happen.
