The Strathcona Regional District is offering test kits for you to check how much radon gas is in your home.
According to the district, the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers is radon gas.
This gas enters homes through contact with the ground, and while radon levels are different for each home, it can go up to elevated levels. The district says being exposed to these levels is linked to increased chances of getting lung cancer.
To keep residents safe, the district is encouraging you to take part in the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge, a challenge focused on giving you the chance to test radon levels through test kits in your own home.
100 homes are getting kits for free, with results shared confidentially.
District board chair Mark Baker says this challenge is an opportunity to support families in protecting their well-being.
“Over the past few years, we’ve all gained a deeper understanding of the importance of air quality, and radon gas is a crucial part of that discussion,” said Baker.
Along with the test kits, the challenge includes a free information session where you can learn about the risks of radon, why it’s a concern, and what you can do to stay safe.
The session will be online, taking place via Zoom on November 25, starting at 7:30 p.m.
For the kits, the district adds you need to pick them up between November 26 and 29, with location and instruction details to be emailed to the first 100 homes registered at a later date.
