Provincial ministry dithering causing local development delays

Several housing developments in Campbell River continue to be delayed while the city and developers wait on provincial ministries.

In a report to council this week, Development Services Director Ian Buck said there’s some good news and bad news. On one hand, the environment ministry has finally allowed one project to go ahead, after months of discussions about a ditch.

On the other hand, another development that has been in limbo for 20 months while the city and province haggled over proposed intersection upgrades has been put on hold by the developer.

“There are other applications that continue to be stalled waiting on action from the province,” Buck said.

He said political and economic uncertainties are affecting the market, and it’s tough to say what will happen in the coming year in terms of local development.

The city currently has 76 applications under review at various stages, including industrial park changes, townhouses, new subdivisions, and small-scale zoning changes; 47 require action by the applicants and 29 require action from the city.
