Community Centre will again serve as emergency warming centre

The city is making sure that if sub-zero weather comes this way, there will be somewhere for the homeless to stay warm at night.

Ever since experiencing the record-high heat dome in 2021 and a double-digit deep freeze in winter the same year, the city has followed its Extreme Weather Plan. This winter, that means identifying a location for overnight sheltering and a plan for when it should be activated.

Staff are suggesting the city continue to use the Community Centre as the warming centre when temperatures hit minus four or colder. They have been looking for a warming centre to be used when shelters reach capacity, but so far no non-city location has been identified.

Council will review this year’s Extreme Weather Plan at Thursday night’s meeting.
