Excavation is now underway for the footprint of a new aquatic centre coming to Strathcona Gardens in Campbell River.
The latest update from the Strathcona Regional District says the chemical room has been relocated and approved and the water main connection to the city has been completed. As well the demolition of the northwest wing is underway, finishing up in a few weeks.
Crews are now working to dig out the space for the new pools, which will include a 25-metre eight-lane pool for lap swimming, leisure and wellness pools, and a hot pool. It will also feature a climbing wall, lazy river, a new waterslide, and a beach-style entry.
The aquatic centre is expected to be finished in 2027.
