Mayor Dahl shares memories of former Premier John Horgan

As tributes continue for former premier John Horgan, who passed away yesterday from cancer, Campbell River mayor Kermit Dahl says he met Horgan twice and found him to be an incredibly special person.

“In 2019, I was at AVICC in Powell River, and I listened to him speak. After it was over I said to one of the other councilors I was with that if Horgan would’ve spoken for 10 more minutes, he would have had my vote,” said Dahl.

“He’s a really good speaker and keeps everybody engaged.”

Dahl says he would meet Horgan again in September 2022 at UBCM when he was only city councillor, where during the conversation, Horgan said that he would speak an extra 10 minutes just for him.

“That’s the kind of guy he was,” said Dahl. “He could remember things that you would be surprised that he could remember something that would seem small and insignificant, but to him, I don’t know if there was anything small or insignificant.”

He says Horgan worked with everyone in the NDP party and communities, remembered where he came from, and that he was a regular guy.

For one thing to remember him for, Dahl adds it’s that Horgan remembered that the North Island is a resource community.

“His passing was an extremely sad day for the province.”
