Arts and culture groups worried about looming funding cuts

Arts and culture organizations in Campbell River will be at council tonight hoping to convince them to back off a new policy that could reduce their funding.

The Tidemark Theatre, the Art Gallery, the Museum, and even the Haig-Brown family have written to council with concerns, and have mobilized supporters to do the same.

Staff say the new financial aid policy will streamline current practices and policies, promote council’s strategic priorities, and allow for better tracking and transparency of the funding received by non-profit organizations.

However, it also includes reductions in property tax exemptions for non-profits, including churches, search and rescue, and others, who may not have the means to make up the difference.

Council will review options with the new policy at tonight’s meeting, it starts at 6 pm.
