City pledges to improve crosswalk after teen seriously injured

After a teenager was hit by a car and seriously injured, the city has committed to improving safety along Rockland Road.

Therena Carlin spoke to council December 3, barely holding back tears while she described what happened to her 16-year old son on November 22.

“A week ago my son was run over by a car at the intersection where Rockland meets Gazelle, because a car sped 60 kilometres down the road, didn’t see him, he went flying across the intersection,” she said.

It was around 4:30 pm when he was hit, she says. The teen suffered multiple bone fractures and other injuries, and is now recovering.

Police say the driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.

Carlin says the crosswalk is used heavily by students going and from high school and college, and by people walking and biking on the nearby trails. She says she doesn’t want anyone else to have to go through the same situation as her family.

Andy Gaylor, director of community planning, said the city will prioritize the intersection and add lighting and other safety improvements in spring.
