The safety netting in the Rod Brind’Amour arena will stay up, the Strathcona Gardens Commission recently decided.
This summer, the Campbell River Storm management requested the safety netting be rolled up for home games. They say it interferes with the quality of game broadcasts, and may result in lost revenue from sponsorship opportunities during the Duck and Puck toss and Teddy Bear Toss fundraisers.
With netting up, spectators cannot throw donations on to the ice as in the past. At the Teddy Bear Toss event earlier this month, donations were collected in the foyer outside of the stands.
The commission rejected the request for safety reasons, pointing out that staff cleaning up after Storm games would be at risk from loose pucks by the next groups using the ice.
