A special uniform auction for the Campbell River Storm will help players heading off to post-secondary education.
This year the team will be auctioning off one jersey featuring the original team logo and design from 1997, signed by all the players on this year’s squad.
Wes Roed, the Storm’s Director of Operations, says the annual dinner and auction helps fund scholarships for players to cover some of their higher education costs, from tuition to books to even parking fees, whatever they need help with.
He says the team tries to encourage players to do their best on the ice, but also to think about preparing for their futures.
“Life after hockey comes pretty quick,” he says. “All you’re thinking is [hockey] your whole life, because you put your skates on at five. But the next 25 years go by so quick, so we’re trying to promote education, promote after-hockey life.”
He says the scholarships have attracted some players to Campbell River in the past, and he hopes the team can continue growing the program in the future.
Storm players will be selling tickets at tonight’s game for the annual Scholarship Dinner and Auction, where final bidding will happen for the one-of-a-kind jersey.
