Habitat restoration completed as compensation for dam upgrades

BC Hydro accomplished a lot in the last three months, as part of ongoing seismic upgrades to dams above the Campbell River.

The utility released its latest project status report this week, and the largest milestone is that pile-driving work on the downstream side of the middle earthfill dam is now complete.

As part of environmental compensation required for the project, BC Hydro also supported three months of restoration work at Baikie Island, done by the Greenways Land Trust and Wei Wai Kum [wee way kum] Guardians, which wrapped up in December. More than seventy-three-hundred cubic metres of fish habitat was enhanced by removing invasive species, and planting native species.

It will be monitored for three years to make sure invasive species don’t grow back.
