The Quadra Island Fire Department is looking for community support to replace Fire Hall #2 at Heriot Bay.
The current hall is a cinder block garage built in 1970. It has no heating, no water, no septic, and no exhaust system to vent the building when the fire trucks start up. It doesn’t meet WorkSafeBC requirements, and a 2015 assessment concluded it would probably collapse in an earthquake.
The Quadra Island Improvement District is responsible for the Island’s fire protection, paid for through property taxes. It will be putting the replacement question to residents through an alternative approval process.
The new hall will cost around $3 million, if they are able to start construction this year.
