Make sure you’re prepared for winter conditions, RCMP

The first snowfall of the season is expected to hit much of the area starting on Thursday, which means those traveling should take extra care.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, we could see up to six centimetres of snow in some areas, and temperatures could plummet to as low as –5 overnight in some regions making driving and walking difficult.

ICBC says it’s important to make sure your vehicle is up to par for winter driving conditions.

“It’s important to be prepared if you have to drive on snowy winter roads,” they say. “Along with slowing down, it’s important to have good winter tires and check them regularly as low temperatures can reduce tire pressure.

“Pack a winter emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stuck or stranded.”

Even RCMP have offered winter driving tips but say just using common sense in difficult conditions is the best tip they can give.

“Check highway conditions online, or by calling 511 before leaving,” they say. “If road conditions are poor, consider changing your plans for a later date.

“Also, clear all snow and ice from a vehicle before hitting the road.”

According to ICBC’s website, 71 per cent of drivers on Vancouver Island have prepared their vehicle for winter by installing proper tires, and roughly 38 per cent of drivers surveyed have witnessed a crash from winter conditions, while 21 per cent have had a near or close call while driving on snow or ice.

Snow is expected to start Thursday and could last until Feb. 6.
