$2.8 million invested to improve flood protection in Tahsis

The Village of Tahsis will improve flood protection thanks to federal funding.

More than $2.8 million is being invested to a project focused on improving flood protection infrastructure for the village in case of extreme weather events, with $1.15 million coming from the federal government.

$963,954 of the funding is from the BC government, while the remaining $771,337 comes from the Village.

Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada says the money will be used to build two flood walls and an earth berm along the North Maquinna Drive from north of Rogers Street to Head Bay Road to safeguard the community.

Village mayor Martin Davis says the community and council thank both the federal and provincial governments for their support.

“The funding for this project means our residents, businesses, school and day care, first responders and critical infrastructure will be protected from future flood events,” said Davis.

Other measures for this project include catch basins, leads, and flap gates on the roads, as well as installing rock or other material on shoreline structures. The goal is to protect the structures from erosion by water, waves, or ice.

It is hoped these upgrades can not only protect the water supply, public works yard, and the fire hall, but also schools as they are at risk of flooding from storms and rising sea levels.
