Overdose prevention site outside local hospital has been shut down

A temporary overdose prevention site outside North Island Hospital has been shut down today.

The site, run by Doctors for Safer Drug Policy, is a space for people to use substances while monitored by staff.

The group says they started running the pop-up site on Sunday, with the goal of starting conversations with health authorities about the topic of the sites.

It was meant to run until this Thursday, but Dr. Erika Kellerhals says it was shut down after City bylaw officers came and told them they were running it on city property.

She says the group is looking at alternate locations for the site, with hopes of finding private property near the hospital to run it.
