Waterfront’s Shipyard Bridge eyed for removal over safety issues

The city is looking to fix up part of the Seagull Walkway along the downtown foreshore.

The walkway runs along the waterfront from Ostler Park south to the Harbour Master’s office. It includes a swing bridge, which was built in 1997 to accommodate ships going in and out of the water for a drydock business. The business relocated to a larger location in 2007.

The Shipyard Bridge remains but is no longer needed, and it’s deteriorated to the point of becoming unsafe. The city is applying to the province for tenure over the section of waterfront so it can be updated and the walkway improved.

In documents provided to the province, the city says the bridge can’t hold more than 25 people safely, which happens when people line the waterfront to watch the Canada Day fireworks.

The city is proposing to remove the bridge completely and replace it with permanent fill and a rip-rap buttress, similar to what’s on either side of the bridge.
