Rise in overdose deaths prompts public safety warning from Campbell River RCMP

Campbell River RCMP have issued a public safety warning after a rise in overdose deaths in the community.

Police say at least 11 people have died from suspected drug overdoses in the past five weeks.

In a statement, RCMP and local health authorities urged drug users to take extra precautions.

Campbell River RCMP detachment commander Insp. Jeff Preston said police are “deeply concerned” by the sharp increase in fatalities.

“Each of these deaths represents a person with family, friends and a future, and we do not want to see this tragic trend continue,” Preston said.

On Sept. 18, Island Health issued a Drug Poisoning Overdose Advisory for Campbell River in response to an increase in drug poisonings in the community.
