BC Hydro issues warning for high flows in lower Campbell River

BC Hydro is warning of high and dangerous water flows in the Campbell River area.

The utility says heavy rain, warm temperatures and snowmelt are driving very high inflows into the Upper Campbell and Buttle Lake reservoir, with levels expected to remain well above normal over the next week.

Water levels have already risen about 50 centimetres between Monday and Tuesday and are forecast to peak this weekend.

“Inflow into the Upper Campbell / Buttle Lake reservoir is currently between 400 and 500 cubic metres per second,” said a statement from BC Hydro.

To manage the system, BC Hydro says it’s increasing water spill through Elk Falls Canyon, significantly boosting overall river discharge.

The public is being urged to stay clear of fast-moving water in the lower Campbell River and around Elk Falls, where flows could reach up to 20 times normal.

Safety signage has been posted, and BC Hydro says updates will be provided if conditions change.

Those who wish to view Elk Falls can do so safely via the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge.
