City of Campbell River receives $20,000 for FIFA World Cup 2026 celebrations

The City of Campbell River has received a $20,000 grant from the province’s 2026 Community Event Support Fund for FIFA World Cup 2026 celebrations.

The province announced in late March it will provide $1.7 million in funding to 32 municipalities, regional districts and First Nations to host free events, allowing communities across B.C. to take part in World Cup festivities.

“We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport,” said Robin Mitchell, recreation and culture manager for the City of Campbell River.

According to Mitchell, the funds will support Soccer by the Sea, a community event intended to bring the sport to residents and visitors in Campbell River.

“Soccer by the Sea is a free, all-ages event celebrating soccer, the spirit of friendly competition, and the lifelong benefits of recreation,” Mitchell said.

The event will take place at Robron Athletic Park on June 18 and will feature an outdoor watch party on a large screen.

“A variety of other soccer-themed activities are also being planned for the same day, in collaboration with Campbell River Youth Soccer Association,” Mitchell said. “The city is also exploring potential opportunities for collaboration with other community partners.”

Event planning is underway and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
