Campbell River rower set to compete for World Rowing Cup in Spain

Rowing Canada has named its senior national team, and a Vancouver Island athlete is among those selected.

Avalon Wasteneys of Campbell River will compete in the women’s double sculls with Alizée Brien of Montreal at an upcoming World Cup event in Seville.

Wasteneys said she and her teammate have developed a strong connection ahead of the race.

“One of the things that excites me most about this new crew with Brien is how well aligned we are in our technical and mental approach to training and racing,” she said. “On a personal level, it’s very meaningful to see my goal of learning to scull and earning a spot in a World Cup crew come to life so quickly.”

The competition is scheduled for May 29 to 31 at the La Cartuja High Performance Centre along the Guadalquivir River.

Other Canadian entries include crews in the men’s coxless four and women’s quadruple sculls.
