Province approves $25 million for Carihi Secondary School rebuild

The Campbell River School District said it has received provincial funding approval to rebuild facilities at Carihi Secondary School.

The funding follows a fire in November 2024 that damaged the school’s A-wing, gymnasium and other learning spaces.

Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma confirmed the province has approved $25 million for the rebuilding effort.

“I want to express my gratitude to the students and the broader school community for their advocacy and for supporting one another during this challenging time while we worked to expedite funding approval,” Ma said in a statement.

The funding allows School District 72 to move ahead with construction planning, requests for proposals and other next steps.

“We know how important these spaces are for students, staff, and the wider community,” said Craig Gillis, Chairperson of the School District 72 Board of Education. “We appreciate the strong advocacy from our community and our shared commitment to restoring Carihi Secondary.”

The school district said additional details, including design plans and construction timelines, will be released once they are confirmed.
