SD 72 secures funding for accessible playground project at Pinecrest Elementary

A project to improve accessibility at an elementary school playground in Campbell River is getting a financial boost.

School District 72 says it has secured grant funding to improve accessibility at Pinecrest Elementary’s playground thanks to a more-than $19,000 grant from Tire Stewardship B.C. through its community grants program.

The funds will support installation of rubber surfacing after the project was identified by SD 72’s accessibility committee.

“With matching funds from the school district’s annual facilities grant, the upgrade is expected to cover a significant portion of the playground surface,” said a statement from SD 72.

The project will replace sections of the existing wood surface to create a smoother, more stable surface for wheelchairs, strollers and other mobility aids.

“While we are incredibly proud of what we accomplished, our vision was always to create a fully inclusive and accessible play space for all children,” said Jayme Johnson, Pinecrest PAC president.

Planning is underway and the new rubber surface is expected to be installed by summer or early fall.
