The City of Campbell River is saluting local hockey legend Rod Brind’Amour after he captured his second Stanley Cup on Sunday.
Campbell River-raised Brind’Amour was behind the bench as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes as the franchise claimed its second Stanley Cup, 20 years after he captained the team to its first championship in 2006.
A statement from the city noted Brind’Amour was the first non-politician to receive Freeman of the City honours, awarded after that 2006 victory. The city also cited his continued support for the community through his cystic fibrosis charity golf tournament.
The city called Brind’Amour an inspiration.
Brind’Amour’s NHL playing career spanned from 1988 to 2010 and included stops with the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Hurricanes.
After retiring in 2010, Brind’Amour joined Carolina’s coaching staff in 2011 as an assistant before taking over as head coach in 2018.
The Brind’Amour-led Hurricanes lost only three games during the 2026 NHL playoffs before defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to win the Stanley Cup.
