Water flows down Elk Falls Canyon to increase starting July 6

B.C. Hydro is warning that water flows down Elk Falls Canyon will increase from four cubic metres per second to about 30 cubic meters per second, starting July 6.

The utility said a flow transfer down the canyon from John Hart powerhouse is required to support annual maintenance work, and that the downstream Campbell River flows will remain the same.

“The maintenance work is scheduled for the summer to coincide with low water conditions,” said a news release from B.C. Hydro.

Work will include a condition assessment of the facility’s key operating equipment and maintenance at the intake and powerhouse.

Water flow will be redirected down Elk Falls Canyon starting the evening of July 5 and is scheduled to return to its normal direction on August 10.

The falls can still be safely observed from the Elk Falls suspension bridge.
