BC Ferries sets sail for busy long weekend

BC Ferries has issued a travel advisory as it sets sail for the B.C. Day long weekend.

The ferry operator said the B.C. Day long weekend is typically the busiest travel weekend of the year on the coast. It is encouraging travellers to plan ahead, with major routes between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland expected to operate at or near capacity during peak travel periods.

BC Ferries is offering tips to help passengers navigate busy sailings over the long weekend.

“Be prepared for sailing waits if a booking has not been made in advance of travel. Depending on when you arrive, there may be limited or no space available for drive-up vehicles,” said a statement from BC Ferries. “Check Current Conditions before leaving for the terminal for the latest sailing and capacity information, and check Service Notices for operational updates.”

BC Ferries also recommends taking transit and travelling as a foot passenger when possible.

The ferry operator said data from the past 10 years shows traffic is typically busiest during the morning and early afternoon on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, following heavy demand throughout most of Friday.
