Quinsam River Hatchery adjusts after-hours access amid bear activity

Wild Wise Campbell River is advising the public that the Quinsam River Hatchery has restricted after-hours access to the dam area behind the facility.

The restriction is intended to protect public safety and give bears in the area time and space to feed.

Visiting hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the main gate at Argonaut Road and Quinsam Road is locked at 3:30 p.m.

“Over the past couple of years, the number of daytime visitors has increased to over 1,000 people per day,” said Wild Wise Campbell River. “This facility is a wonderful educational site to visit and learn about the salmon and other wildlife that play key roles within our eco system.”

Anyone visiting the hatchery, walking the trails or fishing in the river is asked to respect the bears and give them plenty of space.
